Hi there! I'm Kristy (she/her), the maker behind No Weird Areas!
I'm an Autistic, aphantasic (mind-blind) artist from Brisbane, Australia where I live with my fiancé and our Boston Terrier, Bentley. I work part-time as an administrator for a not-for-profit organisation, and spend much of my spare time running No Weird Areas, reading, crocheting, and playing video games.
I've been a lover of all things "weird" and fantastical for as long as I can remember, and dragons have been a special interest of mine ever since I first played Spyro as a young child.
In my teens, there was rarely a time when I could be found without a pencil in my hand, and one of my favourite things to do was create OC's and draw dragons for both myself and others. I struggled a lot with feeling lost and out of place in life, and these characters brought me comfort.
Although I stopped drawing as I grew into adulthood, I always had a world of dragons living in my head. After I discovered polymer clay and began sculpting in 2020, my passion for making art and sharing it with others was rekindled.
I was inspired by many other artists around me, and I quickly discovered and developed my art style by drawing inspiration from the creations of my younger self.
To this day, I continue to find a lot of much-needed comfort in my dragons, and it's a special feeling to be able to bring my characters to life in a tangible form that can be shared with others who might be in need a friend or a little companionship in their own lives.
No Weird Areas originally started as a hobby, and I enjoyed sharing my newest creations on what was my personal Instagram at the time - @noweirdareas. The name originally came from a quote from the television series Primeval, and resonated with me in a fun and quirky way.
"Don't want any... Any sort of weirdness with... No weird areas here!
...
I'm being weird, aren't I?"
In a few short months, my Instagram page transitioned from being a personal account to an art account as sculpting quickly grew from being just a hobby, and the name simply stayed. As my art style continues to grow and I explore other mediums, the name feels more and more fitting, representing both who I am, and all of the weird and wonderful things that I love!
